Our Story
In 2023, Greenwater Foundation was formed as a nonprofit organization to accelerate marine conservation and multiply efforts undertaken by an affiliated organization, GMSO (gmsoresearchvessels.com), which is building a fleet of research vessels to provide access to scientists.
The People Behind the Mission
Board Chair
Commander G. Mark Miller is a 20-year veteran of distinguished service for NOAA where he commanded, managed, and operated small and large research vessels as a uniformed officer in NOAA Corps. He holds an Unlimited Master Mariner (captain) USCG license, a degree in Marine Geology from Long Island University, a Master Diver certification, is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Republic of Congo), and is a member of The Explorers Club.
Executive Director / Board Member
Ever since she can remember, Meg has been drawn to the sea and the life in and along its shores. As Greenwater Foundation's Executive Director, she brings together skills from majoring in Biology and Political Science at UCLA, a law degree from Duke School of Law, and experience leading successful nonprofit programs focused on marine conservation, electric mobility, and sustainable agriculture. Meg is an active member of The Explorers Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2).
Board Member
A native San Franciscan and global life enthusiast, Scott is the Founder of Farm from a Box, building off-grid agricultural infrastructures for small-scale farms globally. He attended UCLA in the early '80s and spent the rest of the decade playing professional golf in Europe and coaching the National Team in Norway. Scott works extensively with his local community group The Guardsmen, raising capital for underserved youth in San Francisco, and enjoys an active membership with The Explorers Club.
Board Member
Allen Shimada retired after 46 years at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center and NOAA Headquarters. His national portfolio included budget formulation and program management for living marine resources, fishery-independent surveys, and external partnerships for six regional fisheries science centers. He is a Fellow, past-Treasurer, and Investment Committee Chair for the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, and serves on the Director's Council for the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington.
Board Member
Dr. Alexander More is an internationally renowned climate and health scientist and economist. His work explores the effects of environmental change on pandemics and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainably combat climate change. A Harvard graduate, he holds positions at Harvard University, the Climate Change Institute, and the University of Massachusetts. He serves on the board of directors for the Daniels Family Sustainable Energy Foundation and The Explorers Club, and is a fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and the Royal Geographical Society.
